UPDATES:
- January 22nd 2019: I have been incredibly busy recently! Here's a summary of the latest public scholarship events that I have been invited to. On January 15, 2019, I had the privilege of discussing a paper at the World Bank Group in KL's academic conference titled "Globalization: Contents and Discontents". It was an incredible conference - I met so many interesting researchers, and got to learn much more about work related to migration, inequality, and refugees. Here is physical proof that I was there ;-)
- (cont.) I was also invited on December 3rd, 2018 to the Mercy Malaysia - Medicins Sans Frontieres Symposium on the Access to Healthcare for Refugees and Asylum-Seekers in Malaysia to speak about my research project on Rohingya construction workers and health consequences related to lack of legal status and refugee work rights in Malaysia. The executive summary for the event can be found here.
- (cont.) I also was in parliament at the end of November 2018! I had the privilege and opportunity to present my research findings related to refugee workers in Malaysia to the Human Resources Minister, YB M Kulasegaran.
- (cont.) I was also invited to the British International School in Kuala Lumpur as the keynote speaker at their Model United Nations Conference. I was very excited to do this as part of my public outreach to youth because I used to compete in Model UN conferences in college, and have so many fond memories/experiences. In my speech, I spoke about issues facing refugees in Malaysia, and in Southeast Asia more broadly. It was fun and I got tons of challenging questions from the audience (mainly 16-year olds!). The future is young and bright.
- I also hosted the first research workshop on forced migration and refugees issues in Malaysia in July, 2018, in conjunction with UNHCR Malaysia. It was attended by various stakeholders - academics, NGO leaders, UN agency representatives, etc. There was an academic poster presentation on ongoing research projects in Southeast Asia and 4 other sessions on topics such as the ethical considerations when researching with marginalized communities. The workshop was attended by 70 individuals. In an event feedback survey we rolled out right after the event, 95% of respondents said they agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "I learned a lot from the event" and 85% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "I made useful connections (at the workshop)". We look forward to the 2nd ASB-UNHCR Research Workshop on Refugee Studies and Forced Migration, TBA for the Summer of 2019!
- October 2nd 2018: It's been such a long time since I've updated my website! In any case, Sam Flanders and I are pleased to present a report for public consumption on the basic findings from a study on Rohingya refugee construction workers in Malaysia conducted from May till August 2018. You can find the report here. Academic papers to follow (hopefully sooner than later!).
- April 12th 2018: My second column in The Edge was published. It's about platforms, network effects, competition, and market power, I highlight the negative consequences of a world with many large economic entities on small countries like Malaysia. Check it out here.
- January 8th 2018: The Edge Malaysia Weekly published an article that I wrote on social status and brain drain. You can check it out here.
- December 12th 2017: I have confirmed my attendance as a speaker at UKM for January 18th of next year. I will speaking on the role of higher education in the era of globalization. I will also you a little bit about my institution, Asia School of Business. For more information, see the poster below and here.
- June 18th 2017: The Chronicle of Higher Education published a piece I wrote on the challenges that women face in overcoming the academic "two-body problem". You may read it here: https://goo.gl/jXydTT.
